Choosing your first stethoscope: a guide for students and new clinicians

Your stethoscope will be with you every shift, so it is worth choosing well. Here is what to look for.

Acoustic performance

Cardiology-grade models such as the Littmann Cardiology IV give the clearest sound, especially for heart murmurs. Tunable diaphragms let you hear low and high frequencies by changing pressure, without flipping the chest piece.

Adult and paediatric use

A dual-head design with a smaller paediatric side is useful if you will examine children or slim patients.

Comfort and durability

Soft-sealing ear tips make long shifts more comfortable and block background noise. Stain-resistant tubing keeps its look for longer.

Look after it

Wipe the chest piece with an alcohol wipe between patients, and avoid storing it folded tightly or in direct heat.
